Mother's Day morning view from Viejas Peak in Alpine. Took the early hike up about 1.7 miles of up hill. The view is of Alpine. The trail is pretty steep with only bits without grade until you get to the top. 


Today, geocaching was like my golf game:
walk 160 yards stop and look for something in a bush, walk another 160' yards and look for something in a bush. 
All together there is a dozen hides along the trail with the final one at the top. I found all but one :( DNF! 

The Cache at the top is named 

Tax Freedom Cache because it was placed on April 17, 2005. I heard that someone calculated that to be the day this year after which the average American would be earning his or her own money, if they had been paying everything in taxes up until then. 

I will do this hike again. CLose to where I live, if you just hike round trip would take about an hour and good training for the Uintas this summer.   

Once on top I sat and had a BP&J and in an area where campers, back in the 70's, stacked rocks to break the wind. The sad part was they they used stones from a winter solstice observatory built by the native inhabitants. (infomation taken from the Tax Freedom Cache page)

There is also two Benchmarks on top dated 1938. They are part of a triangulation station hammered into the Boulders. 

It was a good day and a good morning work-out (like I work out - LOL)

Alpine Ca.

Pretty much the first cache you come to in Alpine. Nice wheel. Can you see it? Now that I am a resident in the area, I have many more nice hides to find. I took a short walk and found three. There is a puzzle cache just down the street that will take some googling. 


Alpine is an unincorporated community in San Diego County lying on a relatively flat plateau in the Cuyamaca Mountains. The location of Alpine is not precisely defined since it is not incorporated. According to the United States Geological Survey (USGS) Alpine is located at N 32 50.103 W 116 45.985 which is near the intersection of Alpine Boulevard and Tavern Road.

Sun Dial

This was along the trail at Pulgas Ridge open area. I think its a Sun
Dial I found quit a few geocaches and managed a nice 6.5 mile hike.
This area dogs get to go off the leash.

Stonewall

24 June 2009. Stonwall peak. Breanna and I had a nice hike, but ended with a DNF on the other side :(

On the way back we found a few caches, all in all a very enjoyable day.

Golden Gate Park SF

In December I started working a project at the VA Medical Center in San Francisco. Well there were a lot of challenges with the project and I had to stay in the bay area for weeks. This gave me the opportunity to do quite a bid of Geocaching in the Bay Area. I spent most of my time in Golden Gate Park. I quickly found that even though you are in a crowded city you can find solitude inside the park. There are always plenty of other people walking, jogging, biking or picnicking in the park, but no one seemed to notice or cared what anyone else was doing. I even walked onto a "Disk Golf" course searching for a cache and some young men just continued playing disk golf around me.

There is a lot of history in the park like the Horseshoe grounds.

Original construction was done by the WPA in the earily 1930s. Back in the 1970s when I was President of the Golden Gate Horseshoe Pitchers Association this was a beautiful place. Two major three day tournaments and several one day events would be held here each summer. I miss the excitement of the tournaments. Homeless people sleeping in the Golden Gate Park have destroyed this part of the park. Run-down as it is, this is still a good place to practice.

I found this one on a raining day with no one around. Even though the street was only yards away, it was a very peaceful place. There are statues, monuments and places dedicated to this cause and that. Really added to the fun of geocaching.

500th Geocache Find

January 17th, 2010. This was my 500th Geocache find. "STOP HERE FOR A LITTLE HEAD" GC22M10 N 33° 33.878 W 117° 20.929 A new cache Los Alamos Rd. off the Tenaja Truck Trail west of Murrieta. 


I walked up over the ridge and passed it. Was pretty frightening when I turned around to see it.
